Former St. Louis Cardinal great Mark McGwire is one of a number of current and former Major League Baseball players who will appear before a Congressional committee today to talk about steroid use in America’s National Pasttime. Missouri’s U.S. Senators have reacted to the committee’s work. The allegations of steroid use are not new, but claims by former Major Leaguer Jose Canseco that he took steroids and introduced other players – including Mark McGwire – to steroids have prompted renewed interest. It’s a House committee that has subpoenaed McGwire and others to Capitol Hill, but Senator Jim Talent will be watching closely. Senator Kit Bond isn’t convinced a lot can be accomplished, but he hopes some good can come of the hearing. Notably absent from the hearing – Barry Bonds – one of the most prominent players suspected of bulking up on supplements.
