He rode his horse into the Executive Mansion one day and proceeded to feed it oats from the furniture. Stories say the horse ate out of the piano or off the mantel. Tour guides at the mansion today will show you an elaborate sideboard and tell you the nicks in it are from the horse’s bridle. Our fourteenth Governor was one of the most flamboyant Governors Missouri ever had. A biographer says Robert Marcellus Stewart was “a stranger to thrift but not to alcohol.”
