The calendar is a tricky thing sometimes. Since the late 1840s historians have been quibbling over whether this country went one entire day without any leadership whatsoever, or whether a Missourian filled that gap and became the shortest-termed President in American history. Four years after that controversy this same man became Vice-President, but that’s generally forgotten.David Rice Atchison always said he slept through most of his term as President of the United States.
