Only two years after coming to Missouri, he was elected a Senator. He was a German, an impressive newspaperman and orator. A progressive, he three times broke with his political party over corruptioon, overseas expansion, civil service reform, inflation and other political exploitations. He constantly took stands against those who opposed the disadvantaged, the Indians, the slaves, and supporters of the Confederacy. He was Carl Schurz, one of this nation’s leading nineteenth century progressive thinkers.
