The Missouri Compromise, which let this state into the Union in 1821 as a possible slave state and let Maine into the Union as a free state, would cause trouble for decades. It would be forty years before a compromise was no longer possible and there would be civil war. It has been said Missourians would go a long way to get into a fight. In the 1850s we didn’t have to go very far at all – just to Kansas.
