Liberal Republicans had had enough of the Radicals and the corrupt Grant administration. Led by Senator Carl Schurz, they walked out of the state Republican convention, nominated their own candidate, and made him the winner of the Governor’s office. When B. Gratz Brown won, it shook the Radical movement throughout Reconstruction America. The next step would be one of the more bizarre episodes in American political history.
