Mack

He was called “the chief,” or simply, “Mack.” In his day he was one of the country’s top war correspondents. In time he presided over his publishing world, never an empire, from a building he called The Temple of Truth. He once said, “The great art of running a newspaper is the art of guessing where hell is liable to break loose next.”

Highway Patrol Warns About New Year’s Drinking And Driving

The countdown is on to the start of the New Year … and a good many Missourians will say goodbye to 2004 and welcome 2005 by attending parties and knocking back a few drinks. The State Highway Patrol says partying and drinking are fine, as long as the drinkers don’t decide to drive. The Patrol’s Captain Chris Ricks says drinking and driving can lead to tragedy, and the public can help by to prevent a tragedy. Star-55 can be called from any cell phone from just about all corners of the State. Calling Star-55 will put you in touch with the State Highway Patrol.

Nixon’s Office Releases List Of Top Consumer Complaints

The State Attorney General’s Office has released its list of consumer complaints. And, for the second year in a row, unauthorized charges to phone bills and switching long-distance prividers without the consumer’s consent topped the list. In all, Attorney Jay Nixon’s office received an estimated 88,000 consumer complaint calls, letters, and e-mails in 2004. The slamming and cramming complaints totaled 1,898. Following that were complaints regarding home repair and remodeling, travel scams and time shares, unsolicited faxes, financing, auto repair, credit, auto sales, debt collectors, and finally -sweepstakes and lotteries.

Reports Say Alomar To Be A Cardinal

If New York’s Newsday is accurate, the Cardinals have a second baseman. The newspaper says the team has come to terms on a one-year deal with former All-Star Roberto Alomar. Alomar played just 56 with the Diamondbacks and White Sox in 2004 because of a broken hand. Alomar, who has 18 years of experience, represented the American League in 12-straight All Star Games. The Cardinals have been looking for a second baseman since Tony Womack departed for the Yankees.

Warner Says One Year Is Enough In New York

It’s one and done for Kurt Warner in New York. The former Rams’ quarterback and two-time MVP says he doesn’t want to be a back up and will leave the Giants after this season. Warner began the season as the Giants starter and led them to a 5-2 start, but he was replaced by Eli Manning after the Giants lost back-to-back games to the Bears and Cardinals. In those two games Warner was a combined 37-66 for 385 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. New York has lost five in a row.
