The merger of Sprint and Nextel will mean a new phone company based in the Kansas City area. Sprint and Nextel plan to spin off Sprint’s local telephone business as a separate company. The new company would be the nation’s biggest independent phone company, with almost eight million lines. It would have about two-thousand workers in Kansas City and be the second-largest company in the metro area.
