Mike Matheny will no longer call St. Louis his occupational home. He is expected to sign a three-year deal with the Giants today. Matheny leaves as the two-time defending Gold Glove winner in the National League. He’s won the award three times in his career as a Cardinal, which began in 2000 after stints in Milwaukee and Toronto. Matheny hit a career high 50 RBI’s in 2004 and had just two passed balls in 2004. The team will now insert 22-year old Yadier Molina as the starting catcher. He played in 51 games last season….The Royals are expected to complete a trade today that will send catcher Benito Santiago to Pittsburgh in exchange for minor league pitcher Leo Nunez. Santiago played just 23 games in 2004 before missing the rest of the season with a back injury. Nunez is 21 and had a record of 10-4 with a 3.06 ERA last season as a swingman at Class A Hickory with 140 strikeouts and 46 walks in 144 innings. He is 27-15 with a 3.36 ERA in his pro career with 387 strikeouts and 116 walks in 434 innings.
