Kansas City Wizards owner Lamar Hunt announced yesterday the soccer team is a financial headache and that he’s putting the franchise up for sale. Hunt said the failure of a bi-state tax in November, which would have helped the Chiefs, played a part in the decision. Hunt, who also owns the Chiefs, said yesterday that the need to focus on more funding for the Chiefs would make it difficult to continue as the owner. The Wizards have enjoyed some success since Major League Soccer debuted in 1996. The Wizards won the 2000 MLS cup and went to the MLS finals this year. Hunt would like for the new owners to keep the team in Kansas City. Hunt said they were on the market as soon as he made the announcement yesterday afternoon.
