Cardinals second baseman Tony Womack is now Yankees second baseman Tony Womack. He signed a two-year $4-million contract with New York on Tuesday. Womack was the Redbirds’ lead-off hitter in his only year in St. Louis. The Cardinals will now have to figure out what to do with their middle infield. They offered short stop Edgar Renteria arbitration yesterday and he has until December 19 to decide whether or not to accept it. If he does, Renteria will play in St. Louis in 2005, if not he can test the free agent market. St. Louis also offered arbitration to catcher Mike Matheny. They were also able to sign starting pitcher Matt Morris, reliever Cal Eldred and utility player John Mabry to one-year deals….The Royals signed starting pitcher Kevin Appier to a minor-league deal, and didn’t offer any of their free agents arbitration.
