The Board of Curators at the University of Missouri has voted to change the name of the new basketball fieldhouse from the Paige Sports Arena to Mizzou Sports Arena. The name change came up after allegations that the previous namesake, Paige Laurie – an heir to the Wal-Mart fortune – had cheated her way through the University of Southern California. Her parents, Bill and Nancy Laurie, had donated $25-Million to build the new arena but relinquished the naming rights after the scandal came up.
Show Me Bowl Kicks Off In St. Louis
Twelve high school football teams are still alive in the Missouri state playoffs. They will all head to the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis this weekend, with dreams of winning a state championship. Three games are on the schedule for today, with three more on tap for Saturday. The action gets started at noon today as Blair Oaks and Cameron meet for the Class 2 championship. Blair Oaks is 13-0 on the season. Cameron enters with a record of 11-2. This is the first championship game appearance for both teams. In Class 4, Webb City battles Clayton in the title game, which will kickoff around 3:15 this afternoon. The Cardinals are 12-0, and will be looking for the school’s seventh state football title. Clayton is 12-1 and looking for the first state championship in school history. Tonight at 7:05, Missouri’s big schools battle it out as Columbia Hickman faces Hazelwood East in the Class 6 championship game. The two teams met back on Oct. 8 in Columbia. Hickman won 23-8. The Kewpies sport a record of 10-1, and are looking for their first football title since 1974. Hazelwood East comes in with a record of 9-3.
Kirkwood Wins 89th Turkey Day Battle
It’s a Thanksgiving tradition in St. Louis. Every year, Kirkwood and Webster Groves high schools meet on the gridiron. This year’s contest went down to the wire. Kirkwood’s Jimmy Dickson kicked a 27-yard field goal with just 28 seconds left, giving the Pioneers a 24-23 win over Webster Groves in the 89th edition of the game. Kirkwood, which lost to Hazelwood East last weekend in the Class 6 semifinals, finishes the year with a record of 10-2. Webster Groves wraps up the year at 6-4.
Mizzou Wraps Up Season At Iowa State
Amazingly, if the Missouri football team loses at Iowa State on Saturday, the Tigers will finish last in the division they were picked to win. After starting the season 4-1, the Tigers have lost five games in a row. That streak has ended Mizzou’s Big 12 North title hopes, and guaranteed Missouri a losing record, which means no bowl game. While the game may seem meaningless for Missouri, it could be huge for Iowa State. If Colorado beats Nebraska today, the Cyclones would need a win over Missouri tomorrow to win the Big 12 North. Saturday’s game gets underway at 12:00 in Ames.
