Call For Fan Sportsmanship Issued As High School Football Playoffs Begin

Many high school football teams from across the state will start their quest for a state championship as the playoffs begin with 32 games Wednesday night – with more first-round action on Friday and Saturday. Rick Kindhart with the State High School Activities Association says there has been a frenzy that has built all season long for many of the players and fans. But Kindhart says the fans need to keep in mind the games are about the players’ performances on the field and the hard work and commitment made over the season. He urges the fans to exercise sportsmanship that would make those players proud to have the fans they do.

Ashcroft had been the center of speculation the last few days over whether he would remain during Bush’s second term. Transportation Department Gears Up For Winter

Winter might seem like a long way off, but it is November, and a visit from Old Man Winter shouldn’t come as a total surprise. The State Transportation Department is ready for whatever winter has to send our way. MoDOT’s Eric Schroeter says about 1,800 vehicles are ready to improve driving conditions, with about 300,000 tons of salt on hand to help melt the ice and snow. Roads with the highest traffic volumes are cleared first. They include Interstates and other major highways.

Former Priest Claims Sexual Misconduct Law Unconstitutional

The State Supreme Court has heard arguments in a case involving former priest James Beine, who is serving time for sexual misconduct in connection with claims from elementary school students that Beine exposed himself to them. Beine, a school counselor in St. Louis when the accusations came to light, is challenging the validity of the state’s sexual misconduct law. An attorney for Beine told the Court the law is unconstitutionally vague because the incident occurred in a boy’s bathroom and involved Beine urinating while standing several feet back from the urinal. The lawyer claims anyone urinating in a restroom has no choice but to expose himself to some degree, and that the law, as it exists, requires a juror to find a person guilty of a crime if that exposure causes affront or alarm to a child under the age of 14.

The Federal Aviation Administration wants to fine Trans-States Airlines $75,000 for flying one of its commuter airplanes with a cracked engine cover more than 100 times – many of the flights coming after the airline was notified its quick-fix of the problem violated FAA regulations. Trans-States is based in Bridgeton and flies under the American Connection label to several Midwest airports.
