MMA Student Accidentally Shot And Killed

A 16-year-old cadet at Missouri Military Academy has been accidentally shot to death. According to the Mexico Public Safety Department, students were involved with a .22 caliber rifle qualification course when one of the students turned to adjust some equipment and his rifle accidentally discharged – striking the victim in the upper body. The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to the Audrain Medical Center emergency room where he was pronounced dead.

Insurance Department Says Medical Malpractice Claims Hit Record Low In 2003

The State Insurance Department says medical malpractice claims have hit a record low – down about 21 percent in 2003, compared to 2002. The Department’s study also shows doctors paid about 121 percent more for their medical malpractice insurance during the four years ending in 2003, although payouts by insurance companies to plaintiffs rose only 14 percent. A spokesman for the State Medical Association says the figures are incomeplete because they don’t include reports from hospitals that insure themselves. The Insurance Department has no power to regulate medical malpractice insurance rates.

Ashcroft Said To Be Considering Leaving AG Post

Some reports in Washington indicate former Governor and U.S. Senator John Ashcroft will leave soon as United States Attorney General. The reports cite aides close to Ashcroft who do not want to be identified indicating he will leave before the start of the second Bush term although he has not yet submitted his resignation and might remain if the President asks him to stay.

Mizzou Opens New Arena With Win

The NCAA investigation is now over, and the Missouri Tigers can finally concentrate on basketball. Mizzou opened the brand-new Paige Sports Arena with a 100-73 win over Central Missouri State in exhibition play. Linas Kleiza led MU with 19 points. He scored the first points at Paige with a pair of early free-throws. Jason Conley had 14 points for Missouri, while Jimmy McKinney contributed 13. The game also featured the first ejections at the new arena. MU’s Marshall Brown and CMSU’s Mike Suggs were thrown out with a little over 4:00 left. The two players got into a scuffle after diving for a loose ball. Michael Hicks scored 21 points for the Mules, who actually outscored Mizzou 50-47 in the second half.

Woody Williams Files For Free Agency

St. Louis Cardinals starter Woody Williams filed for free agency on Thursday after the team declined his $8 million option for next season. The Cardinals are reportedly hoping to bring Williams back next year at a reduced price. Williams was 11-8 this season with a 4.18 ERA. The Cardinals won 16 of his final 19 regular-season starts. Williams started game one in each playoff series for the Cardinals.
