There is no wiggle room left for the Cardinals after their 4-1 loss to Boston in Game 3 of the World Series. They now trail 3-0 and will have to win the final four games to claim their 10th championship. They had their chances. St. Louis loaded the bases in the first inning with one out, but Jim Edmonds flied to center and Larry Walker was thrown out at home. In the third, with runners at first and third and no outs, Walker grounded to first and Jeff Suppan was caught between third and home and thrown out. When Walker grounded out, Suppan thought third base coach Jose Oquendo said “no, no” when he was actually saying “go, go”. Albert Pujols grounded out to end the inning. The Red Sox got to Suppan a little as a time. Manny Ramirez hit a homer in the first, Trot Nixon had an RBI single in the fourth and in the fourth, Ramirez and St. Louis native Bill Mueller drove in runs with RBI singles. Pedro Martinez and the Red Sox bullpen retired 18-straight batters at one point. Larry Walker’s solo home run in the ninth accounted for the Cardinals’ only offense.
