According to the Kansas City Star, a women’s rights advocate in Springfield filed a Title IX complaint against Southwest Missouri State in September, claiming some of the facilities for its women’s programs are not up to snuff. Joyce Mahoney filed the complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil rights. Title IX mandates the NCAA offers equal treatment of both men and women’s sports programs. Mahoney claims that the volleyball and softball teams shouldn’t have to share locker rooms and that the softball field should have lights, a better scoreboard and better irrigation. Mahoney also says the field hockey team shouldn’t have to practice and play on an artificial surface. Mahoney filed another complaint against SMS in 2001.
