Natural Gas Companies Announce Plans To Raise Rates

Two major gas utilities have notified the Public Service Commission that they will raise their natural gas rates. PSC Spokesman Kevin Kelly says the average Missouri Gas Energy customer will pay $110 more to heat a home this winter. The average AmerenUE customer will pay $81 more. MGE has more than half a million customers. Ameren has more than 100,000. Kelly says this is the beginning of notices prior to the winter heating season of November through March. Kelly says some natural gas companies will be lowering rates, because they anticipated higher wholesale supplier rates than actually occurred.

New Senate Poll Shows Bond Well Ahead Of Farmer

The latest statewide poll indicates Republican Christopher Bond will become the fifth person in Missouri history to be elected to the U.S. Senate four or more times. A survey done for the Kansas City Star and Kansas City TV station KMBC gives him 53 percent support among those likely to vote next Tuesday. Democrat Nancy Farmer is at 36 percent. A poll taken by two St. Louis media organizations reported earlier this week Bond led 56-40.

LaRussa Says He’ll Be Back With Cardinals

Just hours after being swept out of the World Series, Cards manager Tony LaRussa said he would return to the team in 2005. LaRussa’s current deal expires at the end of this year, but he said he expects to sign a two-year contract with the Cardinals. The players returned to Busch Stadium on Thursday to clean out their lockers after a stunning end to the season. Boston completed a four-game sweep of 2004 World Series with a 3-0 win on Wednesday. The Cardinals won 105 games during the regular season, and finished 13 games in front of Houston in the National League Central Division. The Cardinals then disposed of the Dodgers and Astros in the playoffs, giving the Redbirds their first pennant since 1987.

Tigers Set For Showdown With Nebraska

One memorable October night ended 25 years of frustration. A 41-24 win over Nebraska gave Missouri its first victory over the Huskers since 1978. The Tigers try to make it two in a row over Nebraska on Saturday as the two teams battle in Lincoln. The winner of Saturday’s game will have the inside track at winning the Big 12 North. Both teams enter the game with a 4-3 record overall, and 2-2 in the Big 12. Missouri is coming off a 20-17 loss to Oklahoma State on Homecoming. The Huskers suffered a 45-21 blowout loss to Kansas State last weekend. The Tigers have not won back-to-back games over Nebraska since 1973-74. Saturday’s game kicks off at 11:00.
