The Attorney General’s office is warning Missourians to be on the lookout for a scam from Nigeria which has con artists sending phony checks to people in an effort to obtain money and/or personal information – such as bank account numbers. Attorney General Jay Nixon says dozens of people throughout the country have already been fooled to the tune of $1.8-Million. Nixon says he found out about the scam when one of these phony checks was sent to him at his office in the State Supreme Court building. He says the checks look real and use the logos of real banks in the United States.
