It had to end sometime, but the way the Cardinals had been playing it was hard to tell when. St. Louis’ winning streak was halted at nine games with a 7-3 loss in San Diego Monday night. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Mike Matheny and Edgar Renteria drove in runs with a pair of singles. The Padres bounced back to take the lead in the fifth inning thanks to Ramon Vazquez and Brian Giles. Vazquez drove in a run with a single and Giles drove in two more with a double. Renteria’s second RBI single of the night came in the sixth inning and gave and re-tied the game at 3-3, but San Diego rallied for four runs off Cardinal relieve Cal Eldred to make it 7-3. Ryan Klesko got the game-winning RBI with a single. In the ninth the Cardinals put two runners on base with now outs, but Tony Womack, Roger Cedeno and Albert Pujols went down in order to end the game… Larry Walker’s status as the Cardinals starting right fielder may be put on hold until next week. The deep bruise in his knee that he suffered on Sunday is expected to keep him out of the rest of the Padres series and the series in L.A. this weekend.
