The Cardinals kept rolling last night with a 4-2 win over the Padres, thanks to three simple swings. In the first inning Larry Walker connected on his 11th home run of the season to get the Cardinals on the board and two batters later Scott Rolen gave St. Louis a 3-0 lead with a two-run shot. It was Rolen’s 32nd home run and his 114th and 115th RBI’s. Chris Carpenter held San Diego in check for seven innings, allowing one run off six hits, a walk and five strikeouts. Ray King was on the mound when Jay Payton reached on an infield single to drive in Ramon Vazquez and the Cardinals’ lead was cut to 3-2. Albert Pujols gave reliever Jason Isringhausen some cushion with a solo home run—his 42nd—in the bottom of the eighth inning. Isringhausen pitched a perfect ninth inning to get his 39th save. Carpenter improved to 14-5 and dropped his ERA to 3.51.
