At the PGA Championship in Kohler, Wisconsin, Darren Clarke shot a seven-under par 65 to take the first round lead. Justin Leonard and Ernie Els were a stroke back at six-under. St. Louis native Hale Irwin finished his first round with a one-over, but had the shot of the day. On the par-three seventh hole, Irwin knocked a three-iron shot for a hole-in-one. Tom Pernice Jr., a Kansas City native was three-over and former Jefferson City Helias golfer, John Daly had the worst round of the day at nine-over.
