Another close game meant another win for the Cardinals. Edgar Renteria’s sixth inning RBI single drove in the game’s only run in a 1-0 decision for the Birds. Jeff Suppan’s bind for a no-hitter ended in the sixth inning when Alex Gonzalez singled. Suppan was pulled in the ninth after giving up a leadoff infield single to Juan Pierre. Steve Kline came in to get the first out of the inning and Jason Isringhausen got the final two to earn his 31st save of the season. Suppan improved to 10-6. The Cardinals have won seven games in a row and are 20-5 since the All-Star Break. St. Louis’ lead is still 12 ½ games after Chicago beat San Diego 5-1… If Chris Carpenter can’t pitch on Sunday Danny Haren will move into his spot on the starting rotation. Carpenter left Tuesday’s game with stiffness in his lower back.
