The State Revenue Department is gearing up for this weekend’s sales tax holiday in which most back-to-school items, including clothing, can be purchased free of the state sales tax. Some cities and counties have – however – refused to go along with the holiday concept that will charge the local sales taxes this weekend. Jessica Robinson with the Revenue Department says even in those counties, the state sales tax of 4.225-percent will not be charged. The sales tax exemption applies to any article of clothing having a taxable value of $100 or less, school supplies not exceeding $50 per purchase, computer software with a taxable value of $200 or less per purchase, and personal computers totalling no more than 2,000.
