Missouri voters have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. In so doing, Missouri becomes the first state in the nation to constitutionally ban gay marriage. Former State Representative Vicky Hartzler, who spearheaded the effort to amend the constitution, claims it was necessary to do so because laws, alone, are not sufficient to stand up to activist judges who make law from the bench. The effort follwed the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling which legalized same-sex marriage in that state.
