A combination of two statewide constitutional amendments, a contentious Democratic gubernatorial race, as well as several other heated statewide and local races are expected to keep poll workers busy today. Betsy Byers, Co-Director of Elections in the Secretary of State’s office, says this could be a record turnout for a primary at this time of year. Byers says that 37 percent turnout is expected to keep her office busy well into the late night hours if all goes well, and perhaps into tomorrow morning if it doesn’t. But she feels confident the problems that plagued the November, 2000 election are fixed and everything will run smoothly.
