The U.S. Senior Open in St. Louis was postponed this morning due to rain. Peter Jacobsen was the leader after the first round, shooting a six-under 65. Three months ago Jacobsen could barely walk after undergoing hip surgery. Craig Stadler was just a stroke behind at five-under. St. Louisan Hale Irwin shot an even-par 71 and Kansas City native Tom Watson was three-over. Arnold Palmer shot a 12-over 83.

Training camp got underway for the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday in River Falls Wisconsin. Over the last two seasons, the Chiefs have had the most dominant offense in the league. But two key components of that offense are gone. Guard John Tait signed with the Browns and tackle Marcus Spears fled for Houston. Brian Waters will be the starting left guard, but the battle for right tackle is on and should be decided soon. John Welbourn and Brett Williams are expected to battle for that spot. Welbourn was brought to Kansas City in a draft-day trade from the Eagles. Welbourn has 55 NFL starts at left tackle and has just one start at right tackle. Williams was inactive for all 16 of the Chiefs regular season games and their playoff loss to the Colts. On defense, the Chiefs don’t have many major changes on the field, as all 11 starters return. To some that may not be good news, considering they’ve had one of the worst defenses to go along with their top-rated offense. However, Gunther Cunningham’s return as defensive coordinator is expected to produce a more aggressive attack, as opposed to a containing attack. The Chiefs are entering thier 14th year of training at The University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

For the second straight night, the Royals were held to just four hits and lost to the Devil Rays 2-0 in Tampa. Devil Rays’ starter Rob Bell lasted 6 1/3 innings to get the win, while Mike Wood went seven innings and allowed both runs for the loss (1-3). In the third Rocco Baldelli drove in a run with a grounder and Tino Martinez had an RBI single. The Royals have now lost seven straight and have scored just 11 runs during the skid. In the fourth inning, manager Tony Pena pulled first baseman Ken Harvey out of the game for not running out a pop fly… Outfielder Juan Gonzalez will not return to the Royals this season because of a back injury. This effectively ends his tenure with the team. In 33 games Gonzalez hit .276 with five home runs and 17 RBI… Rookie pitcher Jimmy Gobble has been sent to Triple-A Omaha.

The Blues and defenseman Chris Pronger have come to terms to a one-year deal worth $10-million. Pronger scored career-high 14 goals last season after missing the previous campaign recovering from knee and wrist surgery. Pronger also added 40 assists in 2003-2004. The Blues are also interested in possibly re-acquiring Brett Hull. According to the St. Louis-Post Dispatch, they’ve contacted Hull’s agent about the possibility. Hull set a number of team offensive records during his ten seasons in St. Louis. Since then, he spent three seasons in Dallas and three seasons in Detroit.

Former Missouri and Paseo High School (Kansas City) basketball player Anthony Peeler has agreed to a deal with the Washington Wizards. Peeler came of the bench for the Kings and was held to career lows in minutes (18.5 mpg) and points (7.5 ppg), but led the NBA in three-point percentage (48.2). Peeler will play for his fifth team in 13 seasons in the league. Peeler was drafted by the Lakers in the 1992 draft and played their until he was traded to the Grizzlies before the 96-97 season. Eight games into the 97-98 season, Peeler was traded to the Timberwolves, where he stayed before his one year in Sacramento.
