It’s a hazardous job but somebody has to do it or our roads will be really … really bad. The State Transportation Department hopes motorists do their part to keep those workers safe. Every day when the weather is good enough, and often all night, hundreds of MoDOT employees are working on the roads. The Transportation Department refines its worker safety programs every year, whether it’s by adding new bright colors to work vests, or finding new, more visible barriers – or enforcing bigger fines for speeding and passing in work zones. The State Highway Patrol is sometimes able to wait and watch for speeders and reckless drivers in work zones. But the Patrol says there’s no way a trooper can be at each of the 625 construction zones this summer in Missouri and at the hundreds of other maintenance work zones.
