The Cardinals trailed the Reds twice, before taking command in an 11-inning 9-6 win in Cincinnati. Starter Woody Williams gave up three runs in the first inning to put the Cardinals in an early hole. Jim Edmonds’ two-run homer in the sixth inning gave St. Louis a 5-4 lead, but it wouldn’t last. In the bottom half of the inning, Adam Dunn and Wily Mo Pena hit solo homers to give the Reds a 6-5 advantage. It stayed that way until the top of the eighth, when Albert Pujols hit his 29th homer run to tie it up and force extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Tony Womack sparked a four-run rally with a bases-loaded single. So Taguchi followed with a sacrifice fly to score a run and Edgar Renteria capped it with a two-run single. Scott Rolen finished with two runs batted and his 20th home run of the season and Jim Edmonds hit his 26th. Ray King worked a third of an inning to get the win and improve to 4-1. The Cardinals remain 10 games in front of the Cubs in the National League Central.
