Mike Sweeney knows how to celebrate a birthday. The Royals first baseman/designated hitter turned 31 on Thursday and gave himself a seven-RBI present by hitting a grand slam and a three run homer in the Royals 13-7 win over the Tigers. Sweeney teed off in the second inning with the bases loaded to give Kansas City a 5-1 lead. His three-run shot in the eighth made it 13-7 and that ended the scoring for the day. Ken Harvey was 2-4 with two RBI’s and two runs. Rookie starter Jimmy Gobble lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs off seven hits and three walks but was able to improve to 6-7 on the season. The win ended a three-game losing streak.
