The two main Democrats running for Governor square off in a debate tonight in Kansas City, the first of back-to-back debates prior to the August 3rd Primary Election. Both tell the Missourinet they hope to use the event tonight in Kansas City and one tomorrow in St. Louis to set the record straight. Challenger Claire McCaskill, the State Auditor, says the debate will give her a chance to talk about Holden’s record, especially what she perceives as Holden’s failure to fix problems in education and transportation. Incumbent Governor Bob Holden believes the debate will give him a chance to explain what he’s done more in-depth than just a short commercial or soundbite on the news. Holden argues it’s difficult to summarize all the good he’s done for health care and education in 30 seconds. Both candidates claim to have rank-and-file Missourians behind them in their gubernatorial bid. McCaskill claims new polling shows her within a couple of percentage points of Holden in this primary race. The Missourinet will Wecast audio of both debates.
