It went down to the wire, but the Show-Me State Games will have a well-known athlete deliver its keynote speech at the opening ceremonies tonight, though a lot of people didn’t know who he was until this week. Derrick Peterson, who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team in the 800-meter run will address the crowd at the Hearnes Center this evening to officially kick off the 20th edition fo the Show-Me State Games. Coordinators learned of Peterson’s decision to do it last night. As for the games, officials are hoping to at least draw the 28,000-plus that it drew in 2003. There are more than 35 sports for those athletes to compete in. The Show-Me State games draws more athletes than any of the 40 state games in the U.S. Events will run over the next three weekends.
