The Cardinals eight-game-winning streak was halted on Sunday as the Cubs doubled them up 8-4 at Busch Stadium. Starter Chris Carpenter was tagged for four runs in the third inning and all four came with two outs. Sammy Sosa capped the rally with a three-run homer. In the fourth the Cubs got two more, thanks to a two-run single from Sosa. Down 8-1 in the ninth, the Cardinals rallied for three runs, but the deficit was too high to overcome. Carpenter dropped to 9-4 on the season, while Kerry Wood got the victory in his return from the disabled list. Wood lasted five innings and allowed one run off five hits. The Cardinals enter the All-Star break with a seven game lead in the National League Central and a record of 54-33.
