Missouri’s top man on military matters in Congress says too many people from small towns and rural areas are dying in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, even though he admits more people from small towns and rural areas join the military in the first place. Congressman Ike Skelton’s district covers a large portion of rural, west central Missouri. Skelton admits the number of those from small towns and rural areas dying in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is actually at about the same rate as those rural folks in uniform. He says the real disproportion is that more people from the lower population areas go into the military in the first place. Skelton suggests better recruiting in the suburbs to even things out, but stops short of a calling for a mandatory draft.
