The Cardinals finished off the Mariners with great pitching and defense with a 2-1 win at Busch Stadium. Jeff Suppan improved to 7-5 by going 7 and 1/3 innings and allowing one run, four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. He also got some help in the field from center fielder Jim Edmonds who snared a Jolbert Cabrera fly then fired home to get Brett Boone at the plate. That defensive gem prevented the first run of the game. In the sixth, the Cardinals scored their two runs with RBI’s from Scott Rolen and Reggie Sanders. Rolen now has 78 runs batted in, which leads the major leagues. The Cardinals pitching staff allowed just four runs in the three-game sweep of Seattle and have a three game lead over the Cubs in the National League Central standings.
