The Cardinals trip to Pittsburgh was less than successful. In fact it was unsuccessful in all the ways that count. The Pirates swept St. Louis in the three-game series, which culminated in a 6-5 final on Wednesday. The Cardinals and Pirates battled back and forth and it proved to be neck-and-neck until the very end. St. Louis trailed 5-4 in the top of the ninth and were on the verge of blowing the game wide open when Edgar Renteria stepped to the plate. He had the bases loaded with no outs, but grounded into a double play, which scored a run. The Cardinals failed to score again. In the bottom half of the inning, Bobby Hill’s pinch-hit single scored Jack Wilson for the game-winner. The Cardinals have a three-and-a-half game lead over the Cubs and Reds in the National League Central.
