The United States Supreme Court has used a Rolla murder case to say the so-called “Missouri two-step” is illegal. That’s a practice in which police question a suspect before giving the person a statement of their right to remain silent, then give them the warning and get a confession in a second interrogration that is based on the first one. The High Court says in a 5-4 ruling that it’s improper to get a confession from people before telling them they have the right to remain silent. The case involves Patricia Seibert, who was convicted of arranging to have her mobile home burned down to cover up the death of her 12-year-old son, and possible allegations of child neglect.
