Danny Haren was probably looking forward to yesterday afternoon. Haren was called up from Class-AAA Memphis on Thursday because starting pitcher Jason Marquis went down with a sore back. Things were going well enough for Haren, who gave up a run in the fourth but had two outs—that’s when things went downhill. The Cubs connected on nine hits in a row and scored nine more runs. Their nine consecutive hits was one shy of the Major League record and their 11 hits in the inning tied a team mark. Moises Alou connected on a three-run homer and Derek Lee hit a two-run shot. Haren was charged with 10 runs in 3 2/3 innings and got the loss. St. Louis’ runs were the result of home runs from John Mabry and Ray Lankford. The Cardinals and Cubs split the four-game series as St. Louis fell a half-game behind the Reds for first place in the National League Central.
