Ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion have given U.S. servicemen who took part in the assault the opportunity to return to France to be honored and to honor their fallen comrades. West-central Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton, the ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, joined President George W. Bush as part of the official U.S. delegation. He spoke to the Missourinet from an Air Force plane, saying he learned quite a bit talking to those returning American veterans. They were happy to be returning to a place where they could honor so many of their comrades who fell in the line of duty. Skelton points out that while we think of the Americans who took part in the invasion as being young and agile, it’s been six decades since the invasion, and the youngest returning veteran is now in his late 70s.
