The Cardinals had no answer for the Pirates or Daryle Ward in an 11-8 loss at Busch Stadium Wednesday night. Ward hit for the cycle and drove in six to help hand St. Louis its third straight loss. Ward struck first with a two-run double in the first inning to get the Pirates on the board. Ward made it 5-2 Pittsburgh with an RBI triple in the fourth and his three-run homer in the fifth inning capped a four-run rally in the fifth. The final piece to the puzzle came in the ninth, when he singled off Steve Kline. Ward’s father, Gary, also hit for the cycle in 1980 as a member of the Minnesota Twins. They are the first father-son duo to accomplish the feat. Jason Marquis allowed six runs and got the loss, dropping to 3-4 on the season.
