The Royals won—that’s the good news. The bad news is they needed a controversial call to avoid blowing a ninth-inning lead to the Tigers and win 4-3. Ken Harvey’s eighth-inning home run put Kansas City one top of Detroit 4-2 and in good position to snap a four-game losing streak. In the top of the ninth, Jeremy Affeldt gave up a single to Chris Shelton and a double to Alex Sanchez. Carlos Guillen reached and drove in Shelton thanks to Desi Relaford’s throwing error. Then Ivan Rodriguez grounded to shortstop Angel Berroa, who flipped to Relaford for the second out. As Relaford made the turn, Guillen began his slide to break up the double play past the base and was called for interference, which resulted in the third out as Sanchez crossed home plate for what would have been the tying run. Instead, the Royals came away with a strange victory. Jason Grimsley got the win in relief and improved to 2-1, while Affeldt got the save.
