An attempt to enact civil litigation reform over the veto of Governor Bob Holden falls 12 votes short in the House. Republicans say tort reform is needed to prevent trial attorneys from suing doctors to the point the physicians are leaving the state. Democrats disagree. They criticize Republican leaders for even pushing for an override the next to last day of the session, saying it was a waste of time when time is short. Both sides accuse the other of playing politics on the issue, even as both sides insists they want to reach a solution to help bring down medical malpractice insurance premiums, which some doctors have said have driven them from their practices.
