The St. Louis Cardinals got the best of the Braves 5-1 at Busch Stadium and Woody Williams captured his first win of the 2004 season. Williams held Atlanta in check over eight innings by giving up one run off four hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts. Steve Kline worked a perfect ninth inning to preserve the win. Catcher Mike Matheny drove in two runs with two sacrifices, while Williams, Tony Womack and Edgar Renteria drove in a run apiece—Renteria hit a homer in the eighth inning. With the win Williams improved to 1-3 on the season.
