Chris Carpenter provided a stellar performance for the Cardinals who avoided a sweep in Montreal with a 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. All five of the Cardinals’ runs came off two swings. In the fifth inning, Albert Pujols launched a two-run shot to give the Cardinas a 2-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Jim Edmonds snapped a 2-2 tie with a three-run blast and ended the scoring for the day. Carpenter lasted eight innings and gave up two runs off four hits and no walks. The perfromance lifted Carpenter’s season record to 3-1. Jason Isringhausen worked the ninth inning to earn his fifth save in six tries. The Cardinals are off Monday and resume work Tuesday at home against the Braves.
