A proposal to force public schools to open no earlier than the last Monday in August has been defeated by the State Senate. The Senate says the move would interfere with local control of school schedules. But Senator Doyle Childers of Reeds Spring says a uniform school opening date is needed. Childers says a uniform school-opening law would pass if it went to a statewide vote. But that’s not going to happen. The Senate has rejected a uniform school opening proposal.
