Chris Carpenter wasn’t as sharp as he wanted to be. In fact, it’s rare that a pitcher can give up four home runs in a game and still come away with the win, but that’s what happened as the Cardinals topped the Phillies 6-5 in Philadelphia. The Cardinals led 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Jim Thome, Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell connected for back-to-back-to-back home runs to make it 5-5. Carpenter eventually made it out of the inning, but was replaced in the sixth inning after Tony Womack gave them the lead back with an RBI in the top half of the inning. From there, Cal Eldred, Steve Kline, Julian Tavarez, Ray King and Jason Isringhausen held Philadelphia scoreless the rest of the way. In the ninth Isringhausen worked around a hit and two walks to get this third save of the year. After intentionally walking Jim Thome to load the bases with two outs, Pat Burrell struck out, but Mike Matheny misplayed the pitch and the ball rolled to the wall. Matheny got a good bounce and threw a strike to first to get Burrell out and end the game. Carpenter improved to 2-1 and Scott Rolen added to his lead in the RBI race to 30.
