Jason Marquis’ debut as a St. Louis Cardinal turned sour in a 7-5 loss to the Brewers. Marquis gave up six runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. He served up homers to Craig Counsell in the first and Lance Overbay in the sixth inning. Jason Simontacchi relieved him, and gave up a long ball to Chad Moeller. The Cardinals erased a 1-0 deficit in the second when Mike Matheny hit a two-run homer to make it 2-1. The Brewers responded with two of their own in the top of the third thanks to an RBI single from Junior Spivey and an RBI triple from Geoff Jenkins. Edgar Renteria’s home run in the fourth re-tied the game. But the blasts from Overbay and Moeller gave Milwaukee the lead back for good. It’s the first time the Cardinals have opened the season with two home losses since 1972. Woody Williams gets the start tonight for St. Louis and Matt Kinney goes for Milwaukee.
