Kerry Robinson wanted a chance to play now he’ll get it—in San Diego. Robinson was dealt to the Padres for fellow outfielder Brian Hunter on Monday afternoon. Robinson was hoping to start in left field, but the resurgence of Ray Lankford was going to leave Robinson on the bench again. Robinson is hitting over .300 this spring, but so is Lankford, who leads the team in stolen bases and runs. Cardinal General Manager Walt Jocketty said, “This deal was more I think about giving Kerry an opportunity to go to a club where he might have a chance to play more than he would with us. It really works out better for him.” Now with Hunter in the mix, the Cardinals’ bench situation is more clearly defined. Hunter, who led the American League in steals in 1997, will start the season in Triple-A Memphis…. Outfielder Greg Vaughn announced after yesterday’s game that he would retire. Vaughn was assigned him to their minor league camp. He’s 38 years old.
