A study of a State Transportation Department program to help motorists whose cars break down in St. Louis shows it’s paying off – not financially – but in fewer traffic jams, less fuel used, and less pollution generated. MoDOT’s motorist assist program has relief vehicles prowling the major highways in St. Louis, offering free help for people whose cars have become disabled. Guys in the trucks can push disabed vehicles out of traffic lanes, change flats, add coolants, pour in some fuel. A study done by the University of Missouri says the service saves taxpayers more than $16-Million a year. It says the services eliminated almsot 190,000 hours in traffic delays in one year.
