Three Missouri Tigers advanced three-of-five wrestlers to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis Thursday. Kenny Burleson advanced in the 157-lb. weight class with an 8-3 win over Matt Nagel of Minnesota. Jeremy Spates won his opening round match in teh 149-lb. division with a 3-2 win over Jeff Ecklof of Oklahoma. Spates’ father, Jack, is the head wrestling coach at OU. Freshman Ben Askren notched Mizzou’s only fall of the day when he pinned Pennsylvania’s Matt Herrington on his back in the first period and advanced in the 174-lb. class. Matt Pell (184) and Jeff Foust (197) are still alive in the consolation brackets. Mizzou is in 22nd place and Oklahoma St. has the lead after day one.
