Less than a day after giving preliminary approval to a proposal to allow Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield to change its name to Missouri State University, the House has rejected the idea by a vote of 81 to 70. House supporters of both the University of Missouri and Central Missouri State University joined forces to defeat the proposal. Today’s final vote on the matter follows a lengthy debate, yesterday, which ended with the proposal being given first round approval. The Senate had approved its version of the name change bill, but that legislation is tied to funding for the University of Missouri.
